Magical Portugal: Azores and Madeira Islands

April 21 – May 04 , 2020

Join us for this 14 day small group adventure to Lisbon, Sao Miguel and Madeira.  This is a trip for anyone who would love to experience the history, local food and drink, beautiful scenery and the culture of Portugal and its islands.  Visit the cobbled streets and ancient houses of the Alfama in Lisbon, to Sintra with its fairytale castles, to Evora for Roman temples and the Inquisition and Obidos with its whitewashed houses and ramparts.

Then on to Sao Miguel in the Azores to see a volcano, relax in a thermal hot spring pool, and discover the only tea plantations in Europe.  To experience the food and wine of the regions, there will be a cooking demonstration of Azorean cuisine followed by a delicious dinner. We will visit a family-owned liqueur shop with tastings and experience a lunch cooked in the volcanic earth.  Unlike many islands where food is imported from the mainland, the delicacies that are grown and created here are in high demand on the mainland.

Then on to Madeira, and with its subtropical climate, the town of Funchal is the setting for a truly sumptuous spectacle, the city’s annual Flower Festival which will be a highlight of our trip.  This island is a true garden paradise with its endemic forests, waterfalls and mountain vistas.  Get ready for lots of adventures too, including a levada walk along the channels that funnel water through the mountains, a toboggan ride careening down the streets of Monte, and a Madeira party night with local cuisine and entertainment.  And of course a Madeira wine tasting.

Tour operates with a maximum of 18 passengers.
